Head, M+ Museum Building Management (Ref:19253)

This position will play an integral role for the museum to ensure all museum building services are planned, implemented and delivered with international museum standards and ready for full operational mode. Once the museum is open, these critical services will need to be overseen to ensure an efficient and safely run building, and the staff and vendors are managed effectively. The building should be prepared to be capable of continually delivering the critical environmental conditions required by the M+ Collection and its associated loan programmes.  The position will also provide support to the museum-wide artistic and special events programmes to facilitate works and ensure activities are compliant and safe. With a presence by the M+ Building Management team in all public areas, it will also require the ability to create a team that support the delivery of an excellent visitor experience. The position will also oversee the M+ Project Management team in the lead up to M+ opening to the public.

The M+ Pavilion, the current 300sqm exhibition space for M+, is included within the scope of this position.

You will be responsible for:

  • acting as the key senior point of contact for the M+ management team for all Museum Building Management functions, reporting on all related areas to ensure management is briefed and that decisions can be made at the most appropriate timing;
  • managing the M+ Project Management team which coordinates between the M+ user group and the Projects and District Facilities Services (DFS) teams, including but not limited to the project master programme for M+ users, handover plan, A&A work coordination, user group site tour;
  • understanding M+’s specialist building management systems, communicating these requirements and ensuring they are delivered to a world-class museum standard;
  • working closely with the DFS Department and other relevant departments to ensure that all Service Level Agreements contain sufficient details to support the level of environmental conditions and that they are achieved through their related teams and contractors;
  • actively overseeing the management and delivery of building management services by working closely with DFS Department relating to mechanical, electrical and other associated systems and ensure that strong planned and preventative maintenance programmes as well as soft services such as cleaning, landscaping and waste management are in place;
  • monitoring and managing all additional requirements above baseline support through the coordination with DFS Department and other departments;
  • taking an active lead in all Health and Safety requirements from an M+ perspective, ensuring at all times that staff are working within a safe environment to the highest levels;
  • ensuring the team receives the necessary training so that their knowledge and skills are of the appropriate level in time for the opening of the museum;
  • establishing and overseeing environmental monitoring of the building to ensure cost effective and efficient usage. Leading on the compliance of these areas from a museum perspective;
  • ensuring Environmental BEAM commitments are met with a particular emphasis on the museum operations;
  • managing all museum capital works programmes for M+;
  • coordinating museum building operational matters both planned and unplanned activities minimising the impact on the artistic and commercial programmes and avoiding any risks of damage to the collection and loan works;
  • managing any related budgets and ensuring the budgets are monitored and well-spent;
  • acting as the key interface with the relevant internal and external parties to support the witnessing and commissioning of systems, document management and building handover, and following through defects process;
  • educating M+ staff and West Kowloon Departments on the role of the specialist requirements for museum related building management, and developing the necessary relationships with these departments to create an effective working environment; and
  • representing and advocating M+ at an international level as part of conference attendance and the relevant museum networks to create a strong assurance to other international institutions that the critical environmental conditions are met to support any potential working relationships including loans.


You should:

  • possess a recognised university degree in relevant disciplines, preferably with the training in Facility Management or equivalent;
  • have at least 15 years of experience including 5 years at a senior level in a building management or project management role or similar, preferably within a cultural or high visitor attendance environment;
  • possess extensive knowledge of buildings from an architectural or design perspective will be an advantage;
  • preferably attain professional memberships from relevant institutions;
  • demonstrate knowledge, experience and confidence to engage and professionally interact with museum and design professionals, as well as other construction-related personnel and contractors to support specification formulation, procurement and ongoing audit procedures for the delivery of M+ building operations;
  • showcase proven ability to interpret technical drawings, construction terms, scheduling and planning concepts; and
  • have excellent oral and written communication skills preferably in English and Chinese.
