The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) is dedicated to showcasing the exquisite artefacts from the Palace Museum’s collections and collaborating with other museums in research, exhibitions, education and public programmes.  The museum comprises 7 600 square metres of gallery space for standing and special exhibitions on Palace Museum’s collections of paintings, calligraphy, antiquities and historical objects, as well as thematic displays on world cultures and civilisations.  With the construction work in full swing for the opening of the museum slated in summer 2022, the HKPM is seeking a leader to oversee the planning and management of ambitious and innovative exhibition projects at the museum to support the museum’s vision of becoming a world-class cultural institution.  Reporting to the Deputy Director, Curatorial and Programming and collaborating with multiple departments, the Senior Manager, Exhibition Planning and Management directs a team of dedicated professionals to ensure the timely and successful delivery a dynamic, diverse and quality programme of approximately 13 exhibitions/rotations per year as well as related ancillary programmes in support of the museum’s institutional goals.


You will be responsible for:

  • assisting the Deputy Director, Curatorial and Programming and working closely with Head Curator to formulate overall exhibition strategies, develop international partnerships, review exhibition proposals, oversee contracting, set exhibition planning milestones, manage installation/rotation/de-installation schedules, and coordinate multiple departments’ effort to ensure the timely and successful delivery of exhibitions, and related programmes, including publications;
  • establishing positive and collaborative working relationships with the Palace Museum, Beijing and other major museums in Mainland China and Hong Kong, as well as international cultural institutions and other key stakeholders.Working with diplomacy and discretion at all times to negotiate exhibition agreements with lenders and partners, overseeing all correspondence and exhibition-related effort in areas such as conservation, transportation, couriers, registration, and insurance;
  • overseeing and supervising all aspects of exhibition logistics, including collaborating with curators to maintain lists of artefacts to be on loan, insurance, transportation, security, installation/rotation/de-installation in accordance with individual exhibition needs and established departmental policies and practices;
  • liaising with internal divisions/departments, organising and managing exhibition planning meetings as necessary during all stages in the planning, implementation, and post-opening evaluation to ensure good information flow and smooth delivery of each exhibition;
  • managing and monitoring budgets for planned exhibitions; and
  • performing any other ad hoc job duties as may require by supervisor.


You should:

  • possess a recognised university degree in museum studies, cultural management, art history or other relevant disciplines;
  • have at least 10 years of experience in exhibition organisation and planning as well as familiarity with other key areas of museum work;
  • have experience working collaboratively with museum professionals and other stakeholders;
  • have robust experience in exhibition budget formulation and monitoring;
  • possess excellent ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple complex projects concurrently;
  • have outstanding organizational and diplomatic skills as well as personnel management skills when working with large teams with diversified culture;
  • possess extensive domestic and international professional networks in the museum world; and
  • be proficient in written and spoken English, fluent in Putonghua, preferably with knowledge of Cantonese or any other second language.
