The purpose of the Installations and Displays team is carry out to the highest international standards the installation and construction needs of M+ Museum in West Kowloon Cultural District. It involves fulfilling duties in all the technical aspects of art handling and installations, from storage, packing, transportation to mount making and exhibition production. With an exhibition space over 15,000 square meters, M+ Museum will be one of the largest and most visually exciting contemporary museums for art and visual culture anywhere in the world.

We are seeking an Audio Visual Specialist to join our team of highly trained and professional art technicians (art handlers/installers). You will be expected to possess a vast understanding and experience of museum technician work and be motivated to join a team committed to producing world class exhibitions of quality and prominence. Working across multiple venues in Hong Kong and abroad this is an exciting opportunity to be part of something very unique - the birth of a new museum.   


Reporting to Senior Manager, Installations and Displays, you will be responsible for:

  • working with various departments on the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of any audio-visual components in the Museum’s exhibitions;
  • working with internal and external clients for exhibition technical support and management, including preparing, setting up, and operating all audio/video equipment for performances, special engagements, conferences, committee meetings, seminars, etc;
  • working with the Senior Manager Installations and Displays to manage the audio-visual requirements across all exhibition spaces, and coordinating these needs with exhibition timelines and relevant stakeholders;
  • communicating with curators, artists, designers and filmmakers to achieve their desired content outcome in the appropriate format and configuration;
  • setting up, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining computer-based audio-visual solutions, including video conferencing, teleconferencing, webcasting, video streaming, video-on-demand, kiosks, and video displays;
  • liaising with external contractors and consultants to install, troubleshoot and maintain museum time-based media installations;
  • coordinating with multiple departments for content development and distribution to public displays; and
  • jointly overseeing inventory and storage of equipment and management of digital assets.

You should:

  • possess at least 5 subjects at Level 2/Grade E or above in the HKDSEE/HKCEE or equivalent academic qualification, and
  1. A minimum of 6 years of full-time technical experience in audio visual support in a museum or gallery operating to international standards of best practice with demonstrable experience in installation, and exhibition support; OR
  2. At least an accredited Advanced Diploma or Bachelor in Fine Arts/Multimedia or equivalent technical qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with a minimum of 4 years of relevant working experience; OR
  3. Applicants with a recognised university degree in engineering, or trade based background, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant working experience with expressive interest on working in the museum sector may be considered for the position.
  • have excellent computer skills to deal with the Museum’s increasing reliance on network and computer-based technology;
  • have experience in supporting computer-based audio-visual solutions, including webcasting, video streaming, video-on-demand, and interactive kiosks;
  • have experience in sound mixing, audio solutions, Sound Web, lighting control, video players and controllers, commercial LCD panels, and digital projectors;
  • be capable of troubleshooting a wide range of commercial and consumer electronics, including but not limited to, tape and disc playback systems, digital cinema projectors, network/IP-based video control systems (Sound Web, Crestron), video conferencing (Tandberg), PCs, Macs, etc;
  • be able to read and interpret CAD drawings; demonstrate experience in balancing multiple responsibilities in order to meet the increasing demand for technology-based presentations. Ability in understanding building/construction plans, exhibition design drawings, and understanding of contemporary art with practical knowledge and experience of creating and interpreting of technical drawings, specifications and design documentation would be an advantage;
  • have experience in event support, including preparing and setting up portable audio and video equipment for special engagements, theatrical shows, live music shows, conferences, committee meetings, seminars, etc;
  • have experience in a professional recording studio environment, including audio engineering and video capture and other matters of AV production;
  • preferably have knowledge of the principles of film inspection and the handling of archival materials and real-world experience in a screening room and/or movie theatre environment;
  • be familiar with Apple QuickTime, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Photoshop, Aftereffects, Adobe Media Encoder, Adobe Premiere Illustrator, DCP Software, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, CAD or Vector Works, Isadora and Watchout. Programming skills in  C++/Open frameworks Arduino would be beneficial;
  • be proficient in PC/MAC/other hardware, graphics card configuration, peripherals such as monitors, projectors and control devices (LAN wireless), skills in electronics would be a benefit;
  • be self-motivated and a team player;
  • preferably possess experience of art handling or technical skills and methods for a safe work environment for staff and collection and the correct use and maintenance of equipment, as well as scheduling and supervising staff and casual labours, but not a must. A class forklift license, a scissor lift operating ticket and a valid Hong Kong driving license would be an advantage; and
  • have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Chinese, with ability to explain technical issues in a non-technical manner.
