M+ Internship Programme is a unique opportunity for those who are interested in developing a career in the museum field. Interns will be able to work closely with M+’s professional staff full-time for a period of one year and gain practical and theoretical training.

Besides working on their specific projects under the supervision of their assigned mentors, the interns will also have the chance to learn from curators and senior members of the team in a series of sharing sessions. This is a paid internship that runs on a recurring basis, with openings every year. The internship is available in the following areas: Curatorial and Collections Management.

The Collections Management Intern will work under the supervision of an M+ Registrar.  The internship will provide the intern with the opportunity to develop practical skills in a museum environment and to learn how collection management professionals are involved in the process of building and maintaining an active collection. The collections management internship covers four areas of museum collections management: archives, registration, database management, and rights and reproduction.


You will be able to:

  • develop practical skills in a museum environment; specifically, in relation to the process of building and maintaining an active collection;
  • work alongside a diverse group of museum professionals with varying specialities;
  • work on projects related to documenting the permanent collection, inventorying and cataloguing objects, assisting with incoming and outgoing loans, exhibitions while working with the Registrar;
  • develop knowledge in archival theory and skills in preserving and cataloguing archives;
  • develop an understanding of rights-management in a museum context with hands-on experience of image licensing; and
  • develop an understanding of, and experience with a Collections Management System (TMS) (i.e. collections database).


You need to:

  • possess a recognised university degree or equivalent qualifications in Art, Design, Architecture, Moving Image, Art Education, Museum Studies, Heritage Preservation or a related subject;
  • have strong interest in working professionally in the museum field, with a focus on collections management;
  • be extremely attentive to details and highly-organised with strong observation;
  • be familiar with computer software including the Microsoft Office. Experience in database management and file format conversion software is preferred; and
  • have a good command of spoken and written English and Chinese (Cantonese/Mandarin).
