Reporting to Artistic Director, Performing Arts, the Head, Learning and Participation (Performing Arts) will be responsible for designing and delivering a diverse and innovative roster of programmes, driving broad creative engagement and impact for the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) across a wide range of communities. The Head will oversee all Learning and Participation (L&P) programmes across WKCD, including the newly opened Xiqu Centre and Freespace to be open in 2019, as well as in local Hong Kong communities. The Head will continue developing the L&P vision and mission and lead a team to implement the strategies and programmes to deliver the vision and mission. S/ he will work collaboratively across the organisation, in particular with the artistic team heads (xiqu, dance, theatre, music and outdoor), as well as the digital, marketing and development teams in the organisation.

 

You will be responsible for:

  • leading the strategic development and delivery of WKCD’s L&P programmes for performing arts to ensure the delivery of high-quality, innovative and exciting programmes of outreach, engagement, participation and arts learning;
  • driving the L&P team in building and sustaining strong partnerships with community, education, public, arts and other stakeholders and partners to ensure programming that is relevant, resonant, connected and impactful;
  • devising sustainable cross-disciplinary learning programmes in collaboration with performing arts artistic teams of xiqu, dance, theatre, music and outdoor and other art forms, ensuring wide reach and impact;
  • enhancing public participation through docent, fellowship, executive and internship programmes;
  • promoting arts learning through partnerships with schools and community groups to develop audience understanding of arts and culture;
  • developing and setting KPIs/ metrics to measure impact, and implementing plans and procedures for effective monitoring and evaluation of the L&P programmes;
  • setting and managing budgets for the L&P team and programmes;
  • recruiting, managing and appraising all staff engaged to deliver the L&P programmes;
  • keeping up-to-date with changes in local, regional and international thinking and trends in community engagement, education and the arts to ensure WKCD’s L&P strategy is in line with key local, regional and international developments in best practice; and
  • working with the Development Department to develop and implement fundraising strategies and plans, including setting and achieving fundraising targets, representing WKCD’s L&P in meetings with key funders, and writing or supervising a range of funding applications to secure support for the L&P programmes.

 

You should:

  • possess a recognised university degree in Performing Arts, Arts or other cultural subjects, Education, Marketing, Communications or equivalent, and proven knowledge of Contemporary Arts Education, community engagement practice or equivalent transferable expertise/ experience;
  • have at least 15 years of relevant experience in organisations related to performing arts, education or culture, of which 8 years in senior positions (leadership experience in start-ups, nonprofits or public organisations are desirable; track record of successful fundraising and delivering funding agreements would be an advantage);
  • be experienced in developing public engagement, community partnerships, and/ or learning strategies at a senior level – preferably within a multi-lingual urban context;
  • have relevant experience of organising learning and participatory activities and outreach programmes for the public to promote openness, accessibility and inclusivity within the community;
  • be committed to the development of the performing arts in Hong Kong and contributing to securing WKCD’s leading position in arts and culture;
  • possess relevant experience of collaborating with a wide range of partners, including youth, schools, local authority departments, retirement facilities, and voluntary sectors;
  • demonstrate ability to inspire, lead and manage a team to deliver innovative and high-quality projects and programmes, as well as enthusiasm for outreach, engagement, training, mentoring and supporting emerging talent;
  • have good organisational and management skills (including budget management) with strong communication and negotiation skills, and capability of handling tight deadlines; and
  • be proficient in written and spoken English and Chinese.
