The purpose of the Installations and Displays team is to carry out to the highest international standards the installation and construction needs of M+ which involves fulfilling duties in all the technical aspects of art handling and installations, including but not limited to storage, packing, transportation to mount making and exhibition production for 17,000 square meters of exhibition space.

We are establishing a team of highly-trained professionals specialised as Art Technician or Assistant Exhibition Technician. You will be expected to possess a vast understanding and experience of museum installation and technician work, and be motivated to join a team committed to producing world-class exhibitions of quality and prominence. Working across multiple venues in Hong Kong and abroad, this is an exciting opportunity to be part of something unique - the birth of a new museum.   

 

Specialising as an Art Technician, you will be responsible for:

(Candidates with less experience may be considered for the post of Assistant Art Technician)

  • installing, packing/ unpacking, transporting and storing artworks across M+ sites and storage facilities to international conservation best practice standards;

  • participating in the safe handling of a variety of works of art and adhering to the principles and practices of safety, health and environment practices in accordance with the WKCDA policies, as well as complying with manual handling guidelines, including the operation of the fork-lift, scissor lift and other tools and equipment necessary to carry out duties;

  • participating, contributing and assisting in the undertaking of risk assessments and review of safe working methods for specific tasks relating to an installation, workshop, mount making and storage practices, including the investigation and implementation of improvements to working practices, techniques and procedures;

  • inspecting work of art prior to handling and reporting any suspected damage or deterioration in condition to the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays, the Registrar and the relevant Conservator;

  • assisting the Registration team with the rationalisation of art storage areas prior to and following the handover of the M+ building by Project Control Department;

  • keeping abreast of international museum best practice methods and procedures for art handling and exhibition production by liaising with colleagues and external professionals and bodies;

  • ensuring equipment is maintained in a serviceable order and conducting regular inventories of tool trollies and packing materials; reporting any equipment problems or supply requirements to the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays; and

  • handling the records creation and management according to the Collections Management policy and procedures to international best practice standards.

 

Specialising as an Assistant Exhibition Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • participating in day-to-day activities of the Installations and Displays team by working closely with the Exhibitions team and Curatorial team to support short and long-term planning and executions of all exhibitions and related projects;

  • assisting in managing both internal and external stakeholders for all exhibition projects;

  • supporting the execution of all exhibition projects and ensuring compliance with museum and government construction standards;

  • enforcing the principles of occupational safety and health, and manual handling guidelines, including the operation of power tools and equipment used within exhibitions and storage areas;

  • providing support for onsite supervision for exhibition construction and demolition, and when installation and de-installation required;

  • assisting in sourcing exhibition equipment and materials based on artist/ curatorial requirement;

  • ensuring tools, equipment and storage areas are maintained in a serviceable order and tool/ equipment inventories are fully stocked; and

  • managing logistic arrangement for equipment transportation across all M+ sites.

 

You should:

  • possess at least 5 subjects at Level 3/ Grade D or above in the HKDSEE/ HKCEE or equivalent academic qualification, and

I. A minimum of 3 years* of full-time technical experience in art handling and installation in a museum, gallery or other art and cultural organisation; OR

II. At least an accredited advanced diploma in fine arts from a recognised tertiary institution or a recognised university degree in engineering or equivalent technical qualification, with a minimum of 2 years* of relevant working expereince in art handling and installation in a museum, gallery or other art and cultural organisation.

* Candidates with less experience may be considered for the post of Assistant Art Technician/ Assistant Exhibition Technician.

  • demonstrate practical knowledge and sound understanding of the principles and practices of risk management, occupational safety and health, manual handling, and the ability to apply them to museum work practices;

  • be able to liaisewithstakeholders; applyanalyticalandconceptualskillstoreason throughproblems;identify and propose workable solutions toproblems with creative ideas; and

  • be proficient in written and spoken English and Chinese.

     

For the position of Art Technician, you should also:

  • possess demonstrable experience in installation, packing/ storage, transportation and exhibition productions such as mount making, crate making and general construction knowledge;

  • have relevant experience and expertise in technical methods of handling/ installing, packing/ unpacking, moving, transporting and storing irreplaceable works of art of all medium to international conservation best practice standards, as well as proven experience and ability to safely operate forklifts, scissor lifts, and other tools and equipment specific to a required task; and

  • be computer literate in MS Office suite including Outlook and Excel, preferably with knowledge in creating and interpreting of technical drawings, specifications and design documentation with programs such as AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Cloud.

 

For the position of Assistant Exhibition Technician, you should also:

  • possess experience and knowledge on project management, onsite supervision and logistics management; experience in “Application for Places of Public Entertainment/ Temporary Places of Public Entertainment Licence” would be an advantage;

  • have interest in museum/ gallery exhibitions and experience in museum/ gallery collections management systems, preferably The Museum System; and

  • be confident to convey ideas and information via written communications in a clear and concise manner, and able to establish and maintain relationships with people at all levels.
